The Rentals, the project of former Weezer bassist Matt Sharp, return on August 26th with their first album in over 15 years, Lost in Alphaville. Also featuring The Black Keys’ Patrick Carney, Ryen Slegr of Ozma, The Section Quartet pianist Lauren Chipman, and Lucius’ own Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig, the album was first previewed by “Thought of Sound”. Now, the quasi-supergroup has unleashed “1000 Seasons”.
Like its predecessor, “1000 Seasons” sees The Rentals recalling the crunchy power pop of the late ’90s. As heavy-breathing guitars and squealing synths scream off into space, Sharp laments our modern reliance on impersonal, instant communication. “But words are not as romantic as they cross the Atlantic in some viritual cry for help,” he sings, urging us to “write it, write it, write it down” while the ladies of Lucius promise, “I will read it when the days don’t move so fast.”
