Over the course of their 30-plus-year history, Melvins have continually shuffled around their lineup. With frontman Buzz Osborne and drummer Dale Crover serving as the sole long-term members, the band has enlisted a bevy of musicians to accompany them both in the studio and on the road. (For example, bassist Trevor Dunn is a member of the “Lite” lineup, while the Melvins’ 1983 lineup, featuring original drummer Mike Dillard, released last year’s Tres Cabrones.)
For the sludge rock veterans’ upcoming 23rd (!) studio album, Osborne and Crover have recruited members of another band, tapping Butthole Surfers guitarist Paul Leary and bassist J.D. Pinkus to record Hold It In. That album is due out October 14th via Ipecac Recordings.

The album marks the first time since 2010’s The Bride Screams Murder that Melvins have recorded as a four-piece. The album reportedly spans 12 tracks and was produced in Los Angeles and Austin this past spring.
In a press release, Osborne described Hold It In as “a refreshing piece of fiction in a boring world of fact and bullshit. Paul is one of the best guitar players I have ever heard and Pinkus has an outside the box type of approach to both guitar and bass that you just have to let it ride. I can’t believe this actually happened. I’m thrilled.”
In support of the release, Melvins have announced a U.S. tour set for October and November. As the band notes on Facebook, the touring lineup will feature Osborne, Crover, and Pinkus. Consult their full schedule below.
In the meantime, Osborne is currently on the road supporting his debut solo album, This Machine Kills Artists, playing all-acoustic shows through mid-September. Consult his itinerary here.
