The Wrens have spent much of 2014 hard at work on their first new album in 11 years. Now, as they work on mixing and cutting the record for proper release, they’ve shared a brief snippet of a leftover song via Facebook.
It may just be a 56-second clip of a track that won’t even end up on the new album, but it’s still the first new piece of music we’ve heard from the Jersey rockers in over a decade. Discussing the snippet, the band wrote:
sometimes you work & you work and you still throw it away ’cause it doesn’t fit. This is one of the more recent cutting-room-floor bits, freshly sliced only yesterday. Was originally verses, then verses w/ a diff. chord progression & melody serving as a Pre-Chorus w/ the 12-string picking all through, then dressed down to this v. w/ 12-strings & percussion only coming in at the end etc.etc.

Other posts on Facebook have had Charles Bissell warning not to “get your hopes up, my best years & work are clearly behind me,” while claiming that “Kevin [Whelan]’s songs however are largely coming out better. So there’s that.” On a more positive note, Bissell did say, “And It’s All Guns & Arrows is the finest song ever recorded. I know it’s not, obviously, and it won’t be even tomorrow but that’s where the high points take you as well. And for one night at least, it is.”
