On “Early Days”, a song our Michael Roffman deemed an “Essential Track” in his review of New, Paul McCartney sings nostalgically about his time in The Beatles. While there are autobiographical details in the song, its accompanying visual takes a fictional route, following two aspiring musicians in the ’50s American South.
Directed by Vincent Haycock and shot in Natchez, Mississipi, and Faraday, Louisiana, the black-and-white clip intercuts scenes of the two young musicians with footage of McCartney leading a jam session. During said jam, Johnny Depp makes a cameo, strumming his guitar while donning a funny hat (as he’s wont to do). It’s the third McCartney video that Depp’s appeared in, following 2012’s “My Valentine” and 2013’s “Queenie Eye”, prompting Macca to joke, “It’s getting to be a running gag. He’s like the Alfred Hitchcock of my videos. And he’s good!” Watch the video below (via Rolling Stone).
