With her undeniable hook on Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy”, and her co-writing credit on Icona Pop’s smash “I Love It”, 22-year-old pop star Charli XCX already has two certified hits to her name. Now, she’s striking out on her own with her sophomore LP, Sucker, due out on October 21st via Neon Gold/Atlantic Records. It serves as the follow-up to her 2013 debut, True Romance.
As a taste of the LP, she’s shared “Break The Rules”. Along with her Fault In Our Stars OST contribution “Boom Clap” (which will also appear on Sucker), “Break The Rules” proves Charli XCX’s proclivity for bombastic choruses. The earworm of a track finds Charli breaking down what pop music is all about with a simple premise: “I don’t want to go to school / I just want to break the rules.” It’s pure pop bliss, with a driving bass line and a slippery synth hook.
