On August 1st, Real Estate played a show at San Francisco’s The Fillmore. The date marked what would have been Grateful Dead founder Jerry Garcia’s 72nd birthday, and to celebrate, Real Estate covered the Dead’s iconic live staple, “He’s Gone”. Bassist Alex Bleeker, who assumed lead vocal duties on the rendition, told the audience beforehand, “We’re going to try our hand at a cover now. We threw this together this afternoon.”

Since Real Estate have always been inclined to jamming, the cover is a perfect fit for the Brooklyn-based reverb aficionados. Guitar-heavy and rustically groovy, the nine-minute cover is a lovely tribute to Garcia, and especially fitting given the specific locale. Much like Ryan Adams’ own stripped down version of the Dead’s “Wharf Rat”, Real Estate’s homage is best heard in the summertime.
