Among his many projects, Flying Lotus has collaborated with director Kahlil Joseph on two separate visuals. In support of FlyLo’s 2012 album, Until the Quiet Comes, the pair released a companion film, which went on to win a Sundance award. They followed it up last year with the equally dramatic and dazzling short film “Wildcat” (which was memorable if only because FlyLo played a cowboy).
Today, FlyLo teams with British artist and designer Aitor Throup for a video portrait of Swedish actress Noomi Rapace. According to Nowness, Thorup describes the project as a “three-dimensional portrait of Rapace being intricately sculpted but also acts as a portrait of her by acting as a metaphor for the various chronological steps in the actor’s process.” In response, FlyLo pieced together six separate unreleased songs for the 10-minute soundtrack, resulting in a menagerie of jazz and funk and other assorted grooves united only by a manic and jittery sense of forward momentum.
Nowness adds, “The material of the six previously unreleased tracks was born out of conversations between Flying Lotus and Throup at the beginning of the project. The result is an extremely personal, hauntingly beautiful and subtly brutal documentation of a subject through the use of various layers of physical, literal and metaphorical processes—reflecting the complexities of not only the protagonist, but of all three artists involved.”
