Here’s how to 3D print your very own Daft Punk helmet

If you’ve ever had the inclination to dress up like Daft Punk for Halloween, or maybe just life in general, your options have been sort of limited. You could either 1) recreate Party City’s terrible, awful version; 2) buy this decidedly spot-on costume from a stranger on Etsy; or 3) purchase a few dozen Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo figures and place them strategically on your body.

Now, though, the folks at Adafruit Learning System have created a handy-dandy, step-by-step guide to 3D printing your very own Daft Punk helmet, complete with flashing lights. Because why use a wondrous 3D printer for practical objects, like say, stem cells and/or a bionic ear?

To get your Daft Punk on, you’re going to need the following: “A neopixel strip, a Trinket 5V minicontroller, slide switches, a JST extension, a lithium polymer battery, and a battery charger. (You’ll see what they’re for soon.) And, of course, a 3D printer, solder, and PLA filament.” If you know what most of that is, bless your heart.

Adafruit has provided everything else, including the open-source code, various circuit diagrams, and the actual assembly process. Since I neither have the technical know-how nor the general patience to learn 3D printing, I won’t waste your time with an explanation. I will say, however, that reading through the process did not make me feel like a complete imbecile. Adafruit also has the various items up for sale, and aside from $3,000 for the 3D printer itself, the rest of the parts and tools should run you about $210.

Read the full guide here. Below, watch a brief making-of video followed by a few more pics of Adafruit’s build.
