Jordy Asher, aka Boots, is best known as the mysterious producer behind the majority of Beyoncé’s recent self-titled album as well as the former frontman of indie pop outfit Blonds. In May, he released his debut mixtape, WinterSpringSummerFall, and today, he returns with a brand new single. Entitled “Mercy”, it highlights Asher’s minimal-but-hypnotic beats and his soulful, somewhat wobbly voice.
For much of its runtime, “Mercy” moves along at a slow, understated pace. It features the soft hum of a piano and Asher humming lines like “Get that evil off my screen,” focusing more on ominous atmosphere than any sense of forward motion. The track doesn’t really pick up until the final 45 seconds, during which a cavalcade of guitars and Asher’s crescendoing voice swell together in one epic wave of momentum.
