For her solo debut, Crush Songs, Karen O dropped the bombastic alt rock trappings of Yeah Yeah Yeahs in favor of sentimental bedroom folk. Along with lead single “Rapt”, Karen’s latest song “Day Go By” highlights this bare bones approach, with the singer armed with just an acoustic guitar and minimalist songwriting.
As she explains in press for the album, “When I was 27, I crushed a lot. I wasn’t sure I’d ever fall in love again. These songs were written and recorded in private around this time.” Keeping in line with that theme, “Day Go By” reflects on the unrelenting desire to be loved. Throughout the simply strummed song, Karen sings about being “wasted, wasted,” before laying it out even more bluntly: “I really need my fix cuz you got me so sick/ I know/ That I’m burning for you.” Crushes can suck sometimes.
