Update: A representative for White says he is not interested in producing The Libertines’ new album. Someone break the news to Doherty.
Newly reunited UK rockers The Libertines have announced plans to release a new album in 2015. For a band whose first two albums are consistently heralded as among the best of the 2000s, it’s a risky proposition. However, as the Guardian points out, they may have Jack White in their corner to mitigate the possibility of a haphazard LP.
In an interview with France’s D8 TV, Libertines frontman Peter Doherty revealed that White “said he’d like to” produce The Libertines’ first new album in 10 years. “I’d love him to do it,” Doherty added. “It’d be amazing.”
Aside from helming albums for his own projects (The White Stripes, The Raconteurs, and The Dead Weather), White has sat behind the board for the likes of Beck, Wanda Jackson, and Karen Elson. He’s also spent quite a lot of time alongside The Strokes, America’s equivalent to The Libertines.
The Libertines plan to hit the studio following their run of reunion shows in October and, as luck would have it, that’s around the same time White wraps up his own tour. However, Doherty is tampering his excitement, telling D8 TV, “I don’t want to get too hopeful.”
