Weezer - Everything Will Be Alright In the End

With their upcoming ninth studio album, Everything Will Be Alright In The End, nerd rock icons Weezer promised a return to their roots, an LP with “the tight structure of The Blue Album with a little bit more abandon like Pinkerton.” That certainly encapsulated “Back To The Shack”, a rip-roaring anthem built on the twin backs of epic guitar antics and a mix of cheesy-meets-insightful lyricism.

Today, Weezer prepare another blast from their very own past with “Cleopatra”. In terms of the Blue AlbumPinkerton model, this hard rock ballad leans decidedly toward the former. Rivers Cuomo’s longing vocals riding atop those signature Weezer riffs, backed by some especially explosive percussion, remind this writer of a more metal-leaning, less self-aware version of “The World Has Turned and Left Me Here”. But even as they dive deep into their own back catalog, Weezer keep things interesting by imbuing the track with a healthy dose of experience and cynicism, adding new layers to a sound that can occasionally be all too familiar.
