September saw Chance the Rapper launch his Verge Campus tour, guest on Boys Noize and Chilly Gonzales’ collaborative track “Tap Dance”, and even make an appearance in Tweedy’s hilarious, star-studded “Low Key” music video alongside Conan O’Brien and John Hodgman. Now, the Chicago MC returns with new music of his own, dropping a surprise song called “No Better Blues”.

Trading in his usual energetic self for something decidedly more intimate and contemplative, Chance airs out his grievances over his band The Social Experiment’s bluesy, piano-led backdrop. He could’ve easily gone the aggressive route — especially with biting lines like “I hate my lovers cause the way they suffocate/ I fuck to hurt, I hurt to date, I hate to date/ I fuck to hate, I hate to love, I hate to hate” — but instead, his mellow, poetic delivery seems to indicate a more therapeutic process is in play.
