In 2005, singer/songwriter M. Ward released one of the finer examples of ramshackle and intimate mid-aughts folk with Transistor Radio. As the album’s 10th anniversary approaches, Merge Records has announced plans for a vinyl reissue and bonus CD featuring four previously unreleased recordings. It will see release on December 2nd.

In anticipation, the label has shared a four-track demo version of “Here Comes The Sun Again”. While you may already have warm memories associated with the original song (thanks to various car commercials or a high school CDR mixtape), you might want to clear some sentimental shelf space for the demo, which reads as even more intimate and affecting.

Featuring just Ward’s voice and an acoustic guitar, this early bare-bones version illustrates the song’s basic effectiveness — even without added instrumentation, it’s a piece that speaks volumes. It’s also a welcome reminder of his career before Ward became one half of She & Him.
