Among the collaborators attached to Adele’s highly anticipation third album is Phil Collins. The Genesis drummer previously said Adele contacted him about writing together. “I wasn’t actually too aware [of her]. I live in a cave [but] she’s achieved an incredible amount and I really love her voice and I love some of that stuff she’s done. So, to me, it’s always an eye-opener. Educational,” Collins explained at the time.
However, in a new interview with Q magazine (via NME), Collins said their collaboration ultimately fell apart after Adele failed to return his calls. “She gave me a piece of music to finish and at first I didn’t know if I’d failed the audition as I didn’t hear back from her,” he explained.
Collins said when he finally did get in touch with Adele, “She said, ‘No, no, I’m moving house and the baby’s taking up a lot of my time, I’m not actually doing anything at the moment.'” However, he added, “now I’ve heard there’s a [new album] coming out. I’m not on it, I know that,” leading Collins to refer to Adele as “a slippery little fish.”
It’s unclear if Collins has inside scoop on the release of Adele’s new album, or if his comments were based on previous reports regarding a late 2014 release. Last month, Adele’s record label XL said there was “no truth” to the rumor of an imminent release.
