French composer SAGE, aka Ambroise Willaume, has been crafting infectious pop rock as the frontman for Revolver since 2006. After all of his guitars were stolen during the band’s last tour, however, SAGE began to channel his creativity through piano. Now, with Revolver on hiatus, SAGE is gearing up to release In Between, a collection of piano-based songs and his first solo EP.
The title track serves as our first preview of the EP and represents a marked departure from Revolver’s more jaunty aesthetic. Here, SAGE embraces the slow-moving and solemn charm of the piano, even using a light falsetto to heighten the song’s melancholic nature. What starts as a simple piano ballad eventually blooms into a full-band affair, with various instruments surfacing here and there effectively making particular arrangements feel 10x more poignant. Although SAGE is moving away from the guitar sounds he’s built his career on, his knack for vibrant melodies still shines through on his solo efforts.
