A few years back, I was reviewing Ryan Adams’ metal album, Orion, and I told my mother about it. “Oh, Bryan Adams,” she said with a sense of wild-eyed glee. “I haven’t heard him in so long! I love ‘Summer of ’69’ so much!” Sadly, her excitement was short lived as I quickly explained that the two songwriters were not the same person.
In the past, Ryan Adams has expressed his displeasure over being mistaken for the Canadian singer-songwriter 15 years his senior. However, last night, Ryan gave a respectful nod to his real-life doppelnämer by covering one of his signature songs, “Run To You”, during a show in Santa Barbara. He didn’t specifically address the meta moment, instead using his pre-song banter to touch upon skinny jeans and “Free Bird”. However, the actual performance saw Adams inject fanyboyish admiration and heartfelt emotion, making for one spirited and energetic rendition. Watch fan-shot footage below.
