As we noted last week, Arcade Fire’s Will Butler has announced his debut solo album, Policy. Due out on March 10th through Merge Records, it was recorded in one week at Jimi Hendrix’s old living room at Electric Lady Studios and features drums from Arcade Fire’s own Jeremy Gara.
A press release describes Policy as “American music — in the tradition of the Violent Femmes, the Breeders, the Modern Lovers, Bob Dylan, Smokey Robinson, the Magnetic Fields, Ghostface Killah. And John Lennon (I know, but it counts). Music where the holy fool runs afoul of the casual world.”
In anticipation, Butler’s unveiled a new song entitled “Take My Side”. The track — which he previously debuted live during a handful of intimate solo shows earlier this month — is a charging, jangly rocker that sees the Canadian musician pleading, “Are you gonna take my side?” Between the barbed guitars and Butler’s manic yelp, it’s reminiscent at times of Arcade Fire’s punk-leaning Reflektor cut, “Joan of Arc”.
