Ash Williams isn’t out of the woods just yet. As Variety reports, the boomstick-toting, chainsaw-wielding hero will return in a new TV sequel to Evil Dead set to air on Starz in 2015. Groovy, baby. (Sorry, just had to be done.)
Ash Vs. Evil Dead will see a reunion between director Sam Raimi, executive producer Rob Talpert, and the man behind Ash’s chiseled good looks and cheesy one-liners, Bruce Campbell. Raimi will write and direct the first half-hour episode out of 10, though no air date has been announced. Raimi is joined in the writer’s room by his older brother Ivan Raimi (Army of Darkness) and Tom Spezialy (who helmed the underrated CW series Reaper).
According to a synopsis for the series, “When a Deadite plague threatens to destroy all of mankind, Ash is finally forced to face his demons — personal and literal. Destiny, it turns out, has no plans to release the unlikely hero from its ‘Evil’ grip.” Canonically, the character’s last appearance was in the 2013 Evil Dead remake, during a post-credit scene where he utters his famous catchphrase. Campbell will also reportedly reprise the character in a long-in-the-works AoD sequel.
In a statement, Sam Raimi said, “Evil Dead has always been a blast. Bruce, Rob, and I are thrilled to have the opportunity to tell the next chapter in Ash’s lame, but heroic saga. With his chainsaw arm and his boomstick, Ash is back to kick some monster butt. And brother, this time there’s a truckload of it.” Added Campbell, “I’m really excited to bring this series to the Evil Dead fans worldwide — it’s going to be everything they have been clamoring for: serious Deadite ass-kicking and plenty of outrageous humor.”
