Like Dinosaur Jr., California X hail from Amherst, Massachusetts and play fuzz-laden rock. Despite those surface similarities, the band’s 2013 self-titled debut was good enough to stand on its own without the incessant comparisons to the ’90s indie legends. Now, California X will continue to make a name for itself with a new album, Nights in the Dark, out January 13th via Don Gionvanni Records.

For the first preview of the LP, the band has shared its title track. Beginning with a burst of deafening fuzz, “Nights in the Dark” is anthemic and fist-raising with powerful riffs and a spitfire chorus. While it’s easy to play “spot the influences” on a song like this, the guitar solos and impeccable execution of ’90s alt rock signifiers make it quite the jam. Listen in below.
