To commemorate its 45th anniversary, The Velvet Underground’s self-titled third album is being reissued as a six-disc box set on November 24th via Polydor/UME. The jam-packed The Velvet Underground – 45th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition includes stereo and mono versions of the original LP, live recordings from a November 1969 show at The Matrix in San Francisco, and a previously unreleased album dubbed The 1969 Sessions.

Earlier this month, we premiered a track off that unheard LP, a blues rock number called “I Can’t Stand It” that would later reappear as a funky rocker on frontman Lou Reed’s solo debut. Now, Rolling Stone points us to an early version of “Sweet Jane”, recorded live at The Matrix one full year before it was officially released on The Velvet Underground’s 1970 album, Loaded.

Here, the band makes use of a slower tempo, and Reed can be heard singing a different set of lyrics, including the bridge of “heavenly wine and roses” that was left off the final version. It’s also important to note that this live version is taken from an entirely different source mix than the one that surfaced on the double album, 1969: The Velvet Underground Live. Listen in below.

Pre-orders for The Velvet Underground – 45th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition are ongoing. For more from the set, check out the remastered live recording of “I’m Waiting For The Man”, which appears on the Matrix disc.
