This year marks Wilco’s 20th anniversary as a band. To celebrate, Jeff Tweedy and co. have lined up a series of US tour dates, including an appearance on The Tonight Show and a six-show residency at Chicago’s Riviera Theatre. They’re also releasing a pair of archival box sets: Alpha Mike Foxtrot: Rare Tracks 1994-2004 collects 77 rarities, outtakes, and live recordings from throughout the band’s career, while What’s Your 20? is a two-disc best of compilation.
Wilco has already previewed Alpha Mike Foxtrot by performing the 2003 rarity “A Magazine Called Sunset” on Fallon. With the box set officially hitting stores today, the band has broken off another piece in the form of “Blasting Fonda”. Listen in below.
The song originally appeared on the soundtrack to the 1996 film Feeling Minnesota and also served as a B-side to the 1997 single “Outtasite (Outta Mind)”. Anchored by a light piano, ambling chords, and little else, the slow-moving track finds frontman Jeff Tweedy dryly singing lines like, “It’s up to you/ To get me home/ I won’t go it alone.” In the accompanying liner notes, Tweedy described its creation, writing, “[‘Blasting Fonda’] was probably the first time it was just [mulit-instrumentalist] Jay [Bennett] and me in the studio – which ended up happening a lot – just basically kind of seeing if we could make some sort of song happen with just the two of us.”
