This year, jam band titans Gov’t Mule celebrate 20 years as a band. To commemorate the occasion, they’ve launched an archival series, which officially kicks off on December 15th with the release of their 2008 Halloween performance of Pink Floyd covers.
Dubbed Dark Side of the Mule, the package also includes a DVD of the concert. As a preview, the band has unveiled a clip of them performing “Fearless”, a track which originally appeared on Pink Floyd’s sixth album, Meddle. Gov’t Mule offer a moodier take on the classic track, as frontman Warren Hayes lightly croons and subtly strums his guitar. The rest of the band looks just as rapt in the hypnotic riffs, each pensively playing their part.
“For Gov’t Mule’s Halloween shows we put on a disguise and afford ourselves the luxury of playing an entire set of someone else’s music,” Haynes said in a statement. “We had done a couple of Pink Floyd covers before, but it was a fun challenge to learn a whole set of their music. I love this old classic Floyd song. We had never played ‘Fearless’ prior to this performance and it was our bassist Jorgen Carlsson’s second show with Gov’t Mule, which made for a lot of spontaneity.” Watch it below.
