Pussy Riot is recording music with Le Tigre

Since their release from prison in 2012, Pussy Riot members Nadya Tolokonnikova and Maria Alyokhina have been engaged in an advocacy campaign to shine light on Russian corruption. Up until now, their efforts have come in the form of speeches and TV appearances. However, it now appears Tolokonnikova and Alyokhina are finally getting back to their roots: making music.

According to a new interview with NME (via FACT), the duo is working on a series of songs and videos with JD Samson of likeminded NYC electroclash band Le Tigre. It seems the mystery project might also involve other members of Le Tigre; as Pitchfork notes, the in-studio snapshot (above) was originally posted by group co-founder Johanna Fateman.

Tolokonnikova said that while their focus now is mostly on “shorter” projects, “maybe at some point in the future we will do an album.”

In a neat bit of serendipity (or perhaps foreshadowing?), Pussy Riot covered Le Tigre’s “Deceptacon” during last weekend’s Vice 20th Anniversary Concert. In lieu of footage, enjoy the original version below.
