Nike to release self-lacing ‘Back to the Future’ shoes in 2015

Nike Air Mag

Not every prediction from Back the Future Part II has proven accurate: We’re still waiting for flying cars and Pepsi Perfect. However, when it comes to Marty McFly’s iconic self-tying footwear, Nike intends to make that dream a reality in 2015.

Speaking this week at a trade show in California, Nike innovation chief Tinker Hatfield confirmed plans to release the Nike Air MAG sometime in 2015.

It was Hatfield himself who was asked to originally design the shoe for Back to the Future II in 1989. After fans petitioned Nike to release a replica version, the company began development on the Air MAG, featuring an electroluminescent out-sole, space age materials, and a rechargeable internal battery good for 3,000 hours. A limited quantity of the shoe was released in 2011 in benefit of the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s disease research.

The version due out in 2015 will reportedly feature self-lacing technology. It makes for a perfect companion to the Back to the Future-inspired hoverboard also due out this year.
