Folk singer Joseph O’Connell, aka Elephant Micah, will release his new album Where in Our Woods on January 20th via Western Vinyl. In anticipation, the eight-track effort is streaming in full below.
According to a press release, Where In Our Woods is a “painstaking work of minimalism, an album defined by its limited palette.” For the recording process, O’Connell recruited only his brother, session drummer Matthew O’Connell, and longtime friend and “key influence,” Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy.
The press adds that “the album follows an ensemble cast of human and animal characters as they negotiate the supernatural and the mundane,” including tales involving Daylight Savings Time (“By the Canal”), the “descent of hundreds of migrating vultures on O’Connell’s parents’ farm” in southern Indiana (“Slow Time Vultures”), and a man who “trained exotic birds to perform stunning Christian-themed stunts” (“Demise of the Bible Birds”). It concludes by noting, “Throughout the album, O’Connell deftly transforms the stuff of everyday American life into a series of entrancing meditations on culture, nature, religion, and modernity.”
Pre-orders for the album are ongoing.
