Suge Knight arrested for murder in hit and run

TMZ is reporting that former Death Row Records CEO Suge Knight ran a man over with his car, and that the victim has died.

Witnesses told TMZ that Knight pulled up at the site of a commercial shoot in Compton involving The Game, Ice Cube, and Dr. Dre. The shoot had apparently wrapped for the day and neither Cube nor Dre were on set. Exiting his car, Knight allegedly got into a verbal altercation with two crew members. When he returned to his vehicle to leave, he put the car in reverse and ran over a bystander, who later died of his injuries. Update – 8 p.m.: According to The Hollywood Reporter, the incident occurred on the set of a promotional shoot for the forthcoming N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton.

Update – 8:30 p.m.: The victim has been identified as Terry Carter, Knight’s friend who arrived with him in the car. Carter was making his way around the rear of the vehicle to enter the passenger door when Knight sped backwards. Two other men were also reportedly hit by Knight’s car; one has been identified as Cle “Bone” Sloane, an actor/activist who has appeared in Training Day and End of Watch. Both men were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Knight’s lawyer is in the process of arranging his client’s surrender, though it is unclear if the Sheriff’s Department will arrest him on hit and run charges or manslauther. According to TMZ, the police may determine he is not legally responsible because the incident occurred while Knight was fleeing in fear for his own life.

Update – 9:30 p.m.: The Sheriff’s Department has issued a bulletin to all officers to be on the lookout for Knight, who is considered armed and dangerous.

Update – January 30th, 7:30 a.m.: Knight has been formally arrested on murder charges. Police say Knight was involved in two separate altercations: the first at the film set and the second at a nearby restaurant, where the hit and run took place. One of the men struck by Knight was allegedly involved in the altercation, according to TMZ, and the victim who died was ran over at least twice. Both those details could prove incriminating for Knight. Additionally, his car was found abandoned in a parking lot.

Update – January 30th, 2:45 p.m.: According to a new report from TMZ citing sources from Knight’s camp, Knight had traveled to the film set to resolve an ongoing feud with Dr. Dre. The first altercation reportedly involved members of Dr. Dre’s security team. After initially leaving the scene, Terry Carter (the man who Knight is alleged to have killed) contacted Knight saying Dre wanted to meet. However, when Knight arrived to the place of their meeting, “he got jumped before he even got out of his truck.”

Knight has been in declining health of late: He was shot six times last summer at Chris Brown’s VMAs party, and over the fall was hospitalized with a blood clot after passing out in a jail, where he was being held following a robbery arrest.
