On January 12th, 1990, Nirvana played a gig at a small Portland, Oregon punk venue called Satyricon. This was pre-Nevermind and pre-Dave Grohl, which meant
The Melvins’ Dale Crover Chad Channing was still behind the drums. Somewhere in the crowd was a lady by the name of Courtney Love. Upon meeting Kurt Cobain that evening, Love would let loose the infamous words, “You look like Dave Pirner,” and the future lovers would wrestle in front of the jukebox.
All around, it was a historic evening for Cobain and Nirvana. Now, exactly 25 years later, you can listen to an audio recording of that very show for the first time ever. YouTube user WY97212 posted the bootleg with a description that reads, “I was there. I recorded their set. And I put it away in a box of tapes. Today marks the 25th anniversary, and it seems like the right time to let people hear this. Enjoy and Play Loud. Recording is raw in accordance with the equipment and tape used at the time.”
Of course, there’s no way to verify the validity of the tape, though all the basic facts do check out. A poster in the video clip clearly shows Nirvana and Melvins playing the venue that night, and there’s also a detailed recounting of that storied first meeting between Cobain and Love. So let’s just call it like it is and take a listen to this piece of rock history below.
Here’s the evening’s full setlist (via Noisey).
