Du Blonde, formerly Beth Jeans Houghton, shares new single “Black Flag” — listen

Beth Jeans Houghton released just one album with her band The Hooves of Destiny: 2012’s Yours Truly, Cellophane Nose. Now, the CoSigned singer-songwriter is returning with a new sound, a new moniker, and a new album. Redubbed Du Blonde, she’ll release an as-yet-untitled full-length later this spring via Mute Records.

As a first glimpse of the new direction, Houghton has unveiled the single “Black Flag”. Gone is the freak folk playfulness of Cellophane Nose, as this track hits fast with chugging rock guitars. If you’re thrown off by the abrupt shift, Houghton explains that there was “no need to ease people in,” adding that “Black Flag” is “a good representation of the direction of the album. There are a few quieter, thoughtful tracks but the general mood is one of finally cracking. The record is a powerful release for me. It’s the result of finally sitting down and taking a look at my life, what I was angry about, what I needed to change.”
