It’s official: Neill Blomkamp to helm new Alien movie

Alien film

Neill Blomkamp has signed a deal with 20th Century Fox to make a new Aliens movie.

In January, Blomkamp (District 9, the forthcoming Chappie) revealed concept art for what he called a “secret” passion project set in the world of Ridley Scott’s sci-fi horror classic Alien. Then, earlier just this month, he suggested that the once-dream film had suddenly become a real possibility. Today on Instagram, he confirmed that “it’s officially [his] next film.”

Reports say that Blomkamp’s film will be separate from the sequel for 2012’s Prometheus, loosely set in the same “world,” which Scott is still developing with Fox. Instead, Blomkamp is said to be working on a more formal Alien film, though whether series star Sigourney Weaver will return is not yet known. As you can see below, the previously released concept art prominently includes Weaver’s Ripley character (see it all here).
