Most of us know the story of Jay Z, how young Shawn Carter came up as a crack dealer in Brooklyn only to go on to become one of the biggest rap moguls in the game. It’s a powerful tale of overcoming odds, following dreams, and innate talent that sees the hip-hop icon crossing paths with numerous figureheads of the industry. In a skit during Saturday Night Live, however, it all becomes a big goof when the main players are recast as awkward white guys.

In a trailer for a fake biopic dubbed The Jay Z Story, writer Mike O’Brien takes on the role of Jay, depicting his life on the streets (“Cocaine for sale!”) to becoming a successful recording artists (“This is insane! I can’t believe I’m great at rap!”). Jason Sudeikis shows up as Jay’s young protégé Kanye West and J.K. Simmons gets a guest spot as rival Nas. There’s even a reworking of “99 Problems” with incredibly pedestrian lyrics like, “Climbing to the top thanks to luck and timing/ Making lots of bucks ’cause I’m good at rhyming.” But what are we doing eating these huge salads, let’s go watch the skit below!

The SNL episode also featured a real performance from a real musical icon, as D’Angelo made his first public appearance behind Black Messiah. Watch the recap here.
