Sweden’s Jennie Abrahamsson may be well known for her booming pop songs across Europe, but her North American presence over four albums has been relatively limited. That’s especially true when lined up to her regional contemporaries like Lykke Li and Robyn, with whom she evokes more than a passing comparison. While most Staters likely know Abrahamsson from her applauded opening spot on Peter Gabriel’s last world tour, she’ll seek to expand her recognition with the March 16th release of her new album, Gemini Gemini.
The latest track off the album is “Phoenix”, a shimmering ode to faith and love. Abrahamsson coos out her promise that “no matter which way you choose to go now/ Know that I’m coming too/ I’ll be around long enough to get you through.” Musically, the verses are even-keeled and calming, like a hand gently reaching out. The chorus is that hand tenderly lifting you to your feet, as synthesizers zoom about and Abrahamsson’s voice reaches for the stars. Take a listen to the next Swedish pop sensation to break through below.
“Phoenix” is the B-side to Abrahamsson’s last single “Wolf”.
