South Carolina songwriter Keath Mead moves at his own pace. He spent three years fine tuning his soulful and jangly sound before submitting his work to Toro Y Moi’s Chaz Bundick, who quickly signed him to his Company Records imprint. Bundick offered to record Mead’s debut LP in his own home studio, and even played bass, drums, and synthesizers on the record. Though the album technically only took eight days to make, those days came sporadically over the course of nine months. After all this time his debut album, Sunday Dinner, will finally be released on February 24th.
Mead’s latest single, “Grow Up”, moves at a similarly patient rate. Mead’s quivering guitar licks flow lazily over Bundick’s understated bass performance, while his vocals gently coo throughout the verses before soaring into a dreamy yet powerful falsetto in the chorus. Just as the song itself is playful homage to arrested development, Mead doesn’t seem in much of hurry either.
Mead will accompany Toro y Moi on several dates this May. Check out the schedule below.
