Not to be outdone by last year’s Big Hat™, Pharrell Williams showed up to the 2015 Grammys with a surprising new look. After winning both Best Music Video and Best Pop Solo Performance for his hit single “Happy”, Pharrell delivered a standout Grammy performance, ending the upbeat winning song with a poignantly dark twist.
Appearing in what seemed to be a bellboy’s outfit from an alternate dystopian universe, the multiple Grammy-winning singer and producer held his hands up alongside a team of dancers wearing dark hoodies. The gesture seemed to echo the “Hands Up Don’t Shoot” protests that began last summer after the fatal shooting of unarmed teenager Michael Brown in Ferguson, St. Louis.
Pharrell’s stunning performance also included a surprise appearance from award-winning film composer Hans Zimmer.
This year’s Grammy Awards also featured performances from Kanye West, Beyoncé, Beck and Chris Martin, Sia, and more. Replay them all here.
