Chicago rapper Tree has released a new mixtape called Trap Genius. Stream it in full below.
In the recent swell in the Chi-Town hip-hop scene, Tree stands out with his very own self-described genre of “soul-trap.” A blend of tried and true Southern styles and something soulfully different, Tree’s style sounds nothing like the rest of his hometown contemporaries. There’s a neo-Zen instrumentation haunting the background of “Hunneds and Fifties”, even as the sound of cocking guns rings over trapped percussion.
Elsewhere, Tree collaborates with Seattle production duo Blue Sky Black Death on “New or Leins / Training Day”, a track that emphasizes the “soul” in the Chicago artist’s work. Capped with audio from news programs highlighting the rampant crime of his home city, the track is at once an ode to his surroundings and a demonstration of his willingness to branch out.
