David Gilmour announces new solo album, first tour dates in a decade

Pink Floyd guitarist readies new solo LP for this fall

David Gilmour

David Gilmour has announced plans to release a new solo LP later this year. Though the Pink Floyd member provided no other information on the album, a message on his website said it is meant to coincide with a string of September tour dates, suggesting a fall release date.

Gilmour last mentioned working on the new record, his first since 2006’s On an Island, last year. “It’s coming along very well,” he told Rolling Stone in October. “There are some sketches that aren’t finished, and some of them will be started again. There’s a few months’ work in it yet. I’m hoping to get it out this following year.”

Pink Floyd, meanwhile, released the largely instrumental album The Endless RiverIn that same RS interview, Gilmour said that release would likely be the last from the band. “I’m really enjoying my life and my music,” he said. “There’s no room for Pink Floyd. The thought of doing any more causes me to break out in a cold sweat.” He added, “Anything we had of value is on [The Endless River}. Trying to do it again would mean using second-best material, and that’s not good enough for me.”
