Much like their UK brethren alt-J and Foals, rising experimental outfit Gengahr has a penchant for stitching together eccentric tapestries of sound. Since debuting last summer with singles “Powder” and “Bathed In Light” — tracks that start as one thing, only to end as something else entirely — the Londoners have earned a reputation as a band that can easily defy any and all attempts at being pigeonholed. The four-piece’s latest track, “Haunter”, continues to reaffirm this narrative.
A curious folk/synthpop/art rock hybrid, it’s at once soothing and eerie, controlled yet seemingly always teetering on the brink of chaos. (Think Unknown Mortal Orchestra mixed with a total MGMT acid trip.) The lone common thread that holds this compelling textile together? Snaking falsetto vocals so crystalline their luster nearly outshines every other instrument. Listen in below.
“Haunter”, along with the two aforementioned songs, will appear on Gengahr’s forthcoming She’s A Witch EP, due out March 10th on Transgressive. Pre-order it here.
