Joel Kinnaman has confirmed to French entertainment website Allocine that he will take on the role of Rick Flagg in the upcoming Hollywood mega-blockbuster Suicide Squad. Kinnaman is the star of AMC’s The Killing, as well as the recent Robocop remake and the upcoming Liam Neeson punch-em-up Run All Night.
Tom Hardy was originally set to play the leader of the super villain team, before he dropped out due to scheduling issues. Jake Gyllenhaal was then courted, but ultimately passed, leaving the door open for Kinnaman.
In Suicide Squad, Flagg is a military man placed at the helm of the Suicide Squad by Amanda Waller (played in the film by Viola Davis). The team Kinnaman will hope to contain is formidable to be sure, with Will Smith set to play Deadshot, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, and Cara Delevingne as Enchantress. Jared Leto will also be present as the Joker, and Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor is rumored to appear as well.
The film, directed by David Ayers, hits theaters on August 5th, 2016.
