Mavis Staples announces new EP, premieres “Your Good Fortune” — listen

Soul legend readies new songs and updated versions of Staple Singers classics

Mavis Staples - new EP - Son Little

It’s only March, but Mavis Staples has already had quite a prolific year. In February, she joined forces with Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy to release Don’t Lose This, her late father Pops Staples’ final album. The soul/gospel icon was also the focus of a new documentary, aptly titled Mavis!, which premiered earlier this month at South By Southwest. Now, she’s gearing up to release a brand new EP called Your Good Fortune on April 21st through ANTI- Records.

The four-track collection features two new original compositions, the title track and “Fight”, written by “future soul” musician and the EP’s head producer Son Little. The remaining pair of songs, “See That My Grave Is Kept Clean” and “Wish I Had Answered”, were previously recorded by The Staple Singers, the family band comprised of Pops, Mavis, and her siblings Pervis, Yvonne, and Cleotha.

“I’m always excited to do new songs, and this young man wrote two just for me,” Mavis raved of Little in a press release. “Seemed like we were a team made in heaven. He writes from his heart; he’s a great singer who sings from his heart, and he reached my heart. I’m so glad we got to work together. The whole experience right down to the finished product was just extraordinary.”

As a preview of the EP, Mavis has shared the title track, a cavernous number which is led by her rich, booming croon. At 75 years young, the music legend is still a mighty force to be reckoned with. Listen in below.
