Stream: Portico’s debut album Living Fields

Featuring Joe Newman of alt-J, Jamie Woon, and Jono McCleery

Portico Quartet formed in 2005 and gained a great deal of praise in their hometown of London and beyond. The group’s jazz-folk eventually warped into an ambient electronic sound, but that only led to a bigger following and more acclaim. But in 2014, Keir Vine left the band, just three years after replacing original member Nick Mulvey. Rather than fold, the remaining trio — Duncan Bellamy, Milo Fitzpatrick and Jack Wyllie — decided to reinvent themselves as simply Portico.

Now, they’re set to reintroduce themselves with a fresh debut entitled Living Fields, out April 7th via Ninja Tune. To help add new life to their new form, the trio tapped another trio of vocalists to collaborate on the album: Jamie Woon, fellow Ninja Tune artist Jono McCleery, and Joe Newman of alt-J. The vocalists aren’t merely guests, as they all know the band intimately, whether from touring with them (McCleery), living with them (Woon), or growing up with them (Newman and Wyllie were childhood friends).

That closeness aids in the sublime feel of the album. The vocals all feel like a natural fit for the alternatively glitchy and smooth compositions, sliding in like members of the outfit themselves. It’s a collection of structured ambiance, ethereal but knowingly corporeal. Living Fields is just the type of album a decade-old band needs to redefine itself without losing those qualities that gained them acknowledgement in the first place. And it’s available to stream in full below.
