Portland, Maine folk duo Builder of the House first came onto the scene in 2012 with their debut EP I am a Tidal Wave. The six-track record was full of barbershop quartet-stylized folk and bluegrass tunes, led by the snappy single “Schizophilia”. They’re finally set to return with their followup release, the Hourglass EP, due April 14th via sonaBlast Records. While their first album was a smaller affair, this new release will include accompaniment from a number of Portland area musicians, allowing bandmates Robert Cimitile and Elliot Heeschen to flesh out their sound in some exciting ways.

If lead single “There Is No Hourglass, Only Sand” is any indication, the collaborations have led to a livelier, fuller sound. The track features singer and fellow Portland native Colleen Clark and pairs one of the pluckiest guitar riffs you’ll hear anytime soon with a stomp-along drum beat. Together, the sounds create a fertile ground for Clark and Cimitile to jauntily harmonize over, including a set of simply catchy “ahh uhms.”

The lyric video for “There is No Hourglass, Only Sand” features the artists manipulating the lyrics in stop motion. Entire scene changes happen with nothing more than paper, cardboard, and some carefully coordinated scenery shifts. Nearly 600 still images were used in all, and when played back at 3.17 frames per second, they create a undeniably charming and laudably complicated clip. Check it out below, with the Soundcloud link beneath the video.
