Jay Z defends TIDAL: “We are here for the long haul … Please give us a chance to grow & get better”

TIDAL, the streaming music platform owned by a group of celebrity musicians, was relaunched in North America only a month ago, but many have declared it dead on arrival. And for good reason: downloads of TIDAL’s iOS App have plummeted in recent weeks, and several fellow musicians — including Ben Gibbard of Death Cab For Cutie and Mumford & Sons — have publicly rebuked the high-fi audio service. Meanwhile, one of TIDAL’s principal owners, Kanye West, has sent mixed signals regarding his continued involvement.

This afternoon, another TIDAL owner, Jay Z, responded to critics in a series of tweets. He defended TIDAL’s early success (“We have over 770,000 subs. We have been in business less than one month … The iTunes Store wasn’t built in a day. It took Spotify 9 years to be successful…”), and also addressed payout rates for artists (“Tidal pays 75% royalty rate to ALL artists, writers and producers – not just the founding members on stage.”)

“We are here for the long haul. Please give us a chance to grow & get better,” Jay Z wrote, adding, “We are human (even Daft Punk ha). We aren’t perfect – but we are determined.”
