London indie pop risers Life In Film have accomplished quite a bit since forming five years ago. In addition to two EPs, 2012’s Needles & Pins and last year’s self-titled release, the four-piece has played alongside The Rolling Stones and been specially chosen to partake in Burberry’s fashion-meets-music campaign Burberry Acoustic.
Now, the band — whose members initially crossed paths while attending Bournemouth University — is gearing up to drop its debut album, Here It Comes, on May 5th. The 12-track effort was produced by Stephen Street (Blur, Kaiser Chiefs), and represents a lovely fusion of Life In Film’s various influences, from The Doors to The Smiths to Belle & Sebastian.
Following previous LP cuts “It’s What Happens Next That Matters Most” and “Get Closer”, the quartet has offered up the latest track, “Alleyway”. Adorned with guitars that seem to burst like confetti and party streamers, it’s an energetic little pop gem about second chances and that butterflies-in-your-stomach feeling you get when you run into an old flame.
“It’s a song about seeing someone for the first time after having broken up,” frontman Samuel Fry tells Consequence of Sound, adding, “It’s an homage to ‘Ladies Party’ in the final verse from David Bowie’s Diamond Dogs, he was a huge influence on me growing up and so it popped into my head when I was writing the lyrics.” If the track’s lovelorn verses don’t make you nostalgic for “the one that got away,” Fry’s feverish croon (charming British accent included!) certainly will. Listen in below.
