Cleveland’s mr. Gnome delivered its fourth full-length collection of art-rock tunes, The Heart of a Dark Star, back in November. It was the first time the duo of Nicole Barille and Sam Meister had recorded an album all on their own, so it’s no surprise they had a few extra tracks lying around. (Well, that and the fact that they have a history of releasing B-side collections anyway.) They’ve picked two such songs up off the cutting room floor and put them together on a new 7-inch, Monster’s Heart.

As a first listen to the new tracks, the band has premiered the single’s A-side, “Sleepwalker”. Befitting the name, the song opens will a slow build of subtle synths and a muffled drumming, like a somnambulator rising slowly from their bed. Droning electronics hum along with strings to give a psychedelic impression that’s only heightened by the dream-like rise and fall of Barille’s vocals. It’s a catchier, poppier side of mr. Gnome, but one whose smart layering leaves no doubt that it’s the same talented team. Take a listen below.
