Minneapolis rapper Charles “Andy” Bothwell, aka Astronautalis, always seems to find himself involved with the most head-turning collaborations. Over the years, he’s teamed up with P.O.S. as Four Fists, with Justin Vernon as Jason Feathers, and more recently hopped on Bird Peterson’s single “Sugarface”. But despite his ever growing list of projects, he remains committed to his own solo material. With a new album on the way, he’s opted to share an outtake called “Papillon”.

“When I work on a song, I find that there comes a point in time when my best laid plans have to go out the window,” Bothwell says. “That whatever I had in mind for a song no longer matters, because the song itself has plans of it‘s own, and there is no use in fighting that.” In the case of “Papillon”, this meant the “pretty little number” wouldn’t fit with the “big, bombastic sound” of his forthcoming album no matter how much he wanted it to. Being so enamored with the track, he saw it fit to release the song on its own terms.

Despite being a solo cut, the song is a collaboration in a way. Doomtree’s Lazerbeak crafted the hypnotic, pensive beat with John Congleton (St. Vincent, Swans) producing, engineering, and mixing the track. Much like with “Sugarface”, Bothwell uses his platform to condemn drugs and excess. Here, however, he’s less enraged and more contemplative. Coyly he slips in lines like, “It ain’t a fucking party if you do it every night” and thinks out loud “one day we’ll all be gone”. That sense of futility permeates throughout the track, channeling the rapper’s stream of consciousness to a bleak place. Listen in below.
