DIY venue 924 Gilman Street lifts ban on Green Day for surprise concert

In the late 1980s, Green Day cut their teeth at the tiny East Bay DIY punk club 924 Gilman, performing alongside Operation Ivy, AFI, and The Offspring. For years, the band was forbidden from hitting the venue’s stage due to their signing with a major record label and worldwide rock stardom. Last night, however, the newly christened Rock and Roll Hall of Famers returned to 924 Gilman for the first time in 14 years.

The secret benefit concert raised money for AK Press, a DIY publishing house which recently lost its warehouse in a fire. The 21-song setlist touched on songs from all points of the band’s career as well as a cover of Operation Ivy’s “Knowledge” featuring Tim Armstrong as a special guest.
