Sam Smith suffered a vocal cord hemorrhage during a show in Sydney last month, which forced the UK crooner to cancel his remaining Australian shows. Now, after consulting a medical specialist in the US, Smith says he’ll need to undergo suspension microlaryngoscopy surgery.

“I am very upset to announce that I have been battling to get my vocal cords better the last 10 days but unfortunately they haven’t recovered and I am going to need surgery,” the “Stay With Me” singer announced in an official statement. Smith added that doctors recommend he take the next six to eight weeks off.

As a result, all of Smith’s upcoming May and June tour dates have been scrapped, including US appearances at Hangout Music Festival and Rock in Rio. His next scheduled show in the states is on July 17th at Forecastle Festival.
