The 16-track effort sees Owens returning to his roots

Former Girls frontman Christopher Owens released his second solo effort, A New Testament, last October. Just a few months down the line and already he’s back with another full-length. Surprise album Chrissybaby Forever spans a hearty 16 songs and was recorded at Decibel Studio in San Francisco. According to the singer-songwriter, the LP represents a return to form aesthetically.

“What I wanted to touch on with this record was more in keeping with the Girls albums — the beginning, the root stuff,” Owens tells Stereogum, adding, “The stuff I played by myself.”

“The album was made with me and my best friend: just a musician and engineer producing. There are limitations, and those can be good things. My solos aren’t going to be as fancy, but they’re going to sound like me. Those were things I wanted to try again.”

The result is an album that sounds more in line with Owens’ earlier work with Girls. There are hints of Father, Son, Holy Ghost, but most of the emphasis seems to be on the breezy, jangle pop stylings circa 2009’s “Laura” and “Lust For Life” — this can especially be heard on Chrissybaby tracks “Another Loser Fuck Up”, “Coffee and Tea”, and “Selfish Feelings”. Listen to the LP in full below.
