On Run the Jewels’ “Banana Clipper”, Killer Mike describes himself as “eloquent as the president.” Over the past year, he’s backed that up. He discussed race relations during a lecture at MIT, gave an emotional speech in the aftermath of the Ferguson verdict, and hung out with Ariana Huffington at this year’s White House Correspondents dinner. It almost seems inevitable that’d he’d run for public office. Well, now it’s actually happening.
Earlier today, Mike shared an image on Instagram of himself with the words “Vote Michael Render. If I win we win.” In the caption he encouraged voters to write in his (birth) name for state representative of Georgia’s 55th district. He also followed up with a tweet reiterating his message.
Update: In a follow-up post, Mike said he is ineligible for this year’s election, but plans to run in the future. “In [Georgia] I wud have to officially enter as a ‘write in’ vs being an Actual Write in (those are the breaks) but, I really felt it important to draw attention to this race. We have BIG Problems in education, schools and prison reform in Ga and I I wanna see change.”
Ever since Run The Jewels 2 dropped last year, Render has been on a winning streak. So who’s to say he won’t win this one too?
Update – June 16th, 12:00 p.m.: Killer Mike appeared as a panelist on Comedy Central’s Nightly Show last night to discuss the controversy surrounding Rachel Dolezal and the idea of defining blackness.
