Lady Gaga kicked off the 2015 Baku European Games in epic fashion last week with a stunning cover of the John Lennon classic “Imagine”.
From behind a piano adorned with a blanket of flowers, the ARTPOP singer effectively calmed a stadium full of anxious sports fans. Her rendition, though faithful in spirit, wavered between hushed and anthemic, and was undoubtedly one of her more poignant live performances in recent years.
For all her shocking antics and oddball outfits, at the very core Lady Gaga is an exquisite artist with a remarkable vocal range most musicians could only dream of. Those powerhouse vocals were on full display, especially during the song’s second verse and chorus, when the heavens seemed to open up and her towering belting of “You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one!” induced legitimate chills.
